There are so many ways to define what gambling is. To many it is nothing more than visiting a casino or playing poker in a friend or neighbor’s basement or man-cave. There are many others who define gambling as any activity that results in currency being either won or lost. To others it is a ticket to fortune and the only way in becoming a millionaire.
The latter would open up the term “gambling” to mean many things. So, for those that cringe at the mere word and cannot bring themselves to even speak it, they may want to take a look at some things that they do every single day that may be referred to as gambling.
With the economy as bad as it is right now, jobs have become somewhat of a gamble. That is not to say that working is a gamble but when it is put in this perspective there are arguments that could be made which could lead one to believe that they are. It seems that we never know these days whether or not we are going to have a job the next day. So in a sense, it is a gamble.
Many people think that any activity that profits non-profit groups or schools is not considered gambling. The truth is, if you are playing the lottery, or even playing bingo to support your favorite school or cause then you are gambling. Fundraisers all over the United States and in other countries also utilize Scratch Off tickets in order to raise money. Guess what, this too is gambling.
Merriam-Wabster’s Dictionary defines gambling as: to play a game for money or property, to bet on an uncertain outcome, or to stake something on a contingency: taking a chance. So the argument of whether or not the lottery or bingo is considered gambling seems to be settled by the definition given in the world’s most famous dictionary. They most certainly are. To say that even non-gambler’s are never risking anything is simply not true. Most people, no matter who they are, will risk something at some point throughout the day, every day. So the next time someone wants to argue with you about the ethics of gambling, point out to them the things that they do on a daily basis that could be even more of a gamble.
